European High Arctic
Item # 2675
As our ship cut through the pack ice of the High European Arctic, a kittiwake trailed behind hoping for an easy catch beneath the broken ice sheets.
While sea ice plays an integral role in reflecting the sun's rays, it is also an inverted garden of sorts and provides shelter and food for tiny organisms and juvenile fish. The disappearance of the ice and the organisms which live in it has a trickle-down effect on the entire Arctic food web.
